I ADORE these sweet fellows! This year, I left my snowfolke on the natural side ~ foregoing the paint and aging.....they are just natural cotton, glitter and glass beads and I love them. These two snowfolke ...Emma and Curtis (named by our grandson) sit atop a painted and sanded solid wooden block. Each block features a wool strip and a letter on each panel spelling out the word S N O W (of course ;). Both snowfolke are the same except for their tiny antique mercury class bulbs ~ Emma is holding the GOLD bulb and Curtis is holding the RED. :) Each snowfolke features glass shoe button eyes, a paper clay and cotton nose, and a hand drawn mouth. Each wears a wool shawl, has twirly wire arms and a bit of chalk for rosy cheeks :). Once finished each one is given a lovely dusting of German glass glitter and sealed for protection.
EACH one measures 8" tall. The snowfolke measure approx 3" wide by 4" tall.
Each one of my spun cotton snowfolke is entirely handmade in the traditional way of antique spun cotton toys. Each is intentionally painted and aged for a timeworn look to hopefully, give it the look of an antique spun cotton ornament.
Once I have created the shape, I then paint each one lightly, adding sweet little hand-sculpted paper clay noses and black glass eyes. and twirly twig-like wire arms. Each one is unique and features its own little touches and embellishments such as antique ribbon scarves, tiny antique mercury glass bulbs, glass button beads, vintage tinsel collar, feather wings, an aged crown, little sprigs of cedar, an acorn, and hickory nuts, from our property. Three of the snowfolke sit atop aged paper mache boxes that I have covered with aged and waxed paper. Each box is painted and waxed inside as well. One little fellow is inside a little painted metal and plastic dome. and one little fellow sits on a thin wooden square that I have covered with aged paper and waxed.
A bit of shading and aging is then added as well as a dusting of antique German glass glitter. Each one will come with my initials (in a small way) carefully packaged in it's own muslin bag and storage box for safekeeping when Winter departs and put them away until it rolls back around again (should you wish that is)
